A big sink hole has opened up in a Cheltenham street today (Friday, June 9). It's the second of the day to appear in town and the latest in a series of gaping holes to appear in recent weeks.

This latest one is is Grosvenor Street in the town centre. Someone has put a stick of wood in it to show how far it goes down and also to alert people.

Earlier, Gloucestershire Highways had to close Montpellier Terrace (again) after a sink hole emerged. It's less than a month since it was closed for a sink hole.

The Grosvenor Street one has opened up opposite Pops homebrew and liquid store. It's on a road that links Albion Street and the High Street in the Strand area of town.

There are historic reasons why Cheltenham is prone to sinkholes, linked to the fine sand that Cheltenham is built on. They can appear more often after wet winters.

The town is also blighted with pot holes as well, although many of these are now being fixed by the county council. One pot hole prompted a tableau protest with a tiny clown, a shovel and a tape measure being placed by one in Leckhampton Road.
